Obituary
Nannie Brown The death of Miss Nannie Brown occurred last Sunday evening at the residence of Mrs. E. Rodliff Bennett on Main street. Miss Brown had not been in good health since last winter when she suffered an attack of grippe. She was born in Norfolk, Va., in 1842 and was a slave until the proclamation of Lincoln gave her freedom. An interesting fact connected with her life was that she was an eye witness of the battle between the Merrimac and Monitor. She has lived in the Bennett family 25 years and was well known in Dexter as a woman of fine character, and will be greatly missed by Mrs. Bennett and other friends. The funeral occurred Tuesday afternoon from the home of Mrs. Bennett and the officiating clergyman was Rev. A. E. Luce, pastor of the Methodist church. The interment took place in Mount Pleasant cemetery.
