WALTER R. BUTLER ST. ALBANS - Walter R. Butler, 78, went to be with the Lord,Aug. 14, 1995, at a Bangor hospital after a short illness. He was born June 26, 1917, at St. Albans, the son of Fred and Lina(Farrar)Butler He graduat- ed from N.H.Fay High School, Class of 1936, and the Maine School of Commerce, (currently Husson Col- lege in Bangor. He owned and op- erated a dairy farm in St. Albans until 1945, an Esso Station in St. Al- bans until 1966, and a Western Auto store on Commercial Street in Hart- land until 1974. His numerous com-. munity activities included: director of St. Albans Consolidated School Board, trustee of Hartland Acade- my, a selectman for the town of St. Albans, a St. Albans volunteer fire- man and fire warden, a member of the St. Albans Planning Board; a member of the Hartland-St.Albans Lions.Club; a former member of the St. Albans Grange; a member of the St. Albans Union Church, as well as a former Sunday school teacher and deacon. He was instrumental in the development of senior citizens housing in St. Albans (Fairhaven Terrace), and a member of the Board of Trustees of the former Scott-Webb Memorial Hospital. He was currently a volunteer helper in Physical therapy at the Dover-Fox- croft YMCA. He will be remembered as an avid gardener, reader, and collector of fine china. He was pre- deceased by his first wife,Eva(Low- ell)Butler, who died in 1991. He is survived by his second wife Sara (Chandler)Butler in St. Albans; two sons,Darrel and his wife, Esther and Galen and his wife,Sheryl, all of St. Albans; two daughters, Rowe. na and her husband, sterling Turner of Newport, and Sharon Gordon of Hartland; two stepsons, Stephen and his wife, Sharon Hopkins of Rip- ley and John and his wife, Harriet Hopkins of Congress, Ariz.; one brother, Harold and his wife, Marjo- rie Butler of Cocoa,Fla.; one sister, Ruby and her husband, John Morri- son of Thomaston; many grandchil- dren and great-grandchildren. There will be no public visiting hours. Funeral services will be held 2 P.M. Wednesday, Aug. 16, at St. Al- bans Union Church with the Rev. Lewis Bell officting. Burial will be in St. Albans Village Cemetery. Do- nations may be made in his memory to the St. Albans Union Church Building Fund or to the Dover-Fox- croft YMCA.
