ROBERT L. WHITNEY DEXTER - Robert Lord Whitney, 68, died unexpectedly Dec. 18,1994 at a Dover-Foxcroft hospital.He was born July 2, 1926, at Cambridge, the son of Raymond C. and Bernice (Lord) Whitney Sr. He attended Maine Central Institute in Pittsfield and graduated from the New Hamp- ton School of New Hampshire. Un- der the V-12 Program, he entered Dartmouth College and the Massa- chusetts Institute of Technology. While stationed in Washington, D.C., he met his beloved wife, Betty Norton of Mandan, N.D., whom he married Aug. 17, 1946. He complet- ed his college education at the Uni- versity of Maine, Orono, majoring in business administration. He was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity and played baseball at UMO. He then played semi-pro baseball for the Tri-County League. He remained an avid sports enthusiast, golfer and lifelong Boston Red Sox fan. In 1951, he founded, with his brother and father, R.C. Whitney & Sons, an oil distributorship. He was a mason and past master of the Cambridge Lodge. He was a member of the Dexter Jaycees; a post president of the Dexter Club; past chairman of the board of trustees of Plummer Memorial Hospital; past chairman of the Dexter Planning Board; past treasurer of the Dexter Municipal Golf Course; a trustee of Skowhe- gan Savings Bank; and a trustee of Silver Lake Housing Corp. In addi- tion to his wife and mother, he is survived by his children, Carol Whit- ney of Augusta, Richard Whitney of Dexter, and Barbara (Whitney) Her- ring of Garland; one brother, Ray- mond C. Whitney Jr. of Dexter; four grandchildren, Angela McKusick, Emily Whitney, Sarah Whitney and Beth McKusick, all of Dexter; one nephew, Doug Whitney of Green- ville; two sons-in-law, Richard How- ard of Augusta and Steven Herring of Garland; a daughter-in-law, Bar- bara (Lindsay) Whitney of Dexter. Friends may call 2-A and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 231 Main St,, Dexter, Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednes- day, Dec. 21, 1994, at the Dexter United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Krisann Byrne-Scheri officiat- ing. Burial will be in at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Dexter. In lieu of flow- ers, donations may be made to the Dexter United Methodist Church, the Dexter Historical Society, or an annual Sports Integrity Award, in memory of Robert L. Whitney.
