Obituary
CLYDE P. JEWETT DEXTER - Clyde P. Jewett, 82, of Dexter died Thursday, March 3, 1994, at a Dover-Foxcroft hospital, after a short illness. He was born June 2, 1911, in Ripley, the son of Gilman and Cora (Knowles) Jewett. He graduated from N.H. Fay High School in Dexter. He was a native of Ripley, where he did farming for several years, moving to Dexter, where he operated a suc- cessful retail business until he enlist- ed in the U.S. Navy Seabees in 1942 with a carpenter's rating. Mr. Jewett then started in the construction busi- ness as a foreman for Buckman & Mountain. Later he had a company of his own and built many commercial and residential buildings in the area. He was especially proud of the de- signing and building of the Courser Memorial School in Ripley. He was hired as a building inspector during the construction of the Nokomis Re- gional High School in Newport. He later became maintenance supervisor for S.A.D. No. 48. Mr. Jewett always had a sincere interest in town affairs and especially the schools where he once served as a school director. For many years, Clyde Jewett had de- signed and built many unique entries for parades in Dexter and surround- ing towns. Last year, Mr. Jewett en- joyed presenting his scale model of the Santa Maria and discussing the historical significance of it with many students in surrounding schools. Un- fortunately he was unable to com- plete his final project, a scale replica of the Abbott Memorial Library in Dexter. He was looking forward to presenting it in the 4th of July parade, He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Mary (Hoyt) Jewett of Dexter; a son, Jeffery L. Jewett and his wife, Robin of Fairfield; a daughter, Sandro M. Matthews and her husband, Gary of Cumberland, R.I.; two granddaugh- ters, Sarah and Hannah Matthews of Cumberland, R.I. At the request of the family there will be no calling hours. A graveside service will be held at the Gay Cemetery in Farming- ton, in the spring. Funeral arrange- ments under the direction of Adams Funeral Home, 3 Court St., Farming- ton.
