LOCAL HISTORY COLUIMN Edited by Mrs. Annie W. Murphy and Miss Mary H. Hamilton Contributors solicited ABB0TT: The Paschal Abbott Branch. (6) Paschal Abbott, known as "Deacon" Paschal, was born in An- dover, Mass., July 23, 1788, the seventh child of (5) Nathan and Sa- rah (Ballard) Abbott. He was one of the Abbott brothers who in 1820 came into Maine seeking a mill site and found it in the town ship of Dex- ter. He lived on what is now Grove street in the second house north of the railroad crossing. Paschal Abbott married, first, his cousin, Mary Abbott, born April 18. 1791 and died Oct. 28,1828, the daughter of (5) Job and Anna (Bal- lard) Abbott of Wilton, N.H. They had one child, a daughter, Mary, born June 21, 1814 and died Sept. 9, 1868. She married Rev. James Boutwell of Brentwood, N.H. We are indebted to Dr. Edward S. Abbott of Bridgton, Maine, for a large part of what follows. He writes: James and Mary Boutwell had six children that I remember. Paschal Boutwell, who lived in Winchester, Mass., and was a wool commission merchant, doing business in Boston, and who left a daughter who is mar- ried and, I think still lives in Win- chester. I do not remember her name. Mary Boutwell married Dr. Carr and had two children, Mary and John. After Dr. Carr's death Mary married Natt Plummer of Everett, Mass., and they had one daughter. Mary's daughter, Mary Carr, was adopted by Mr. Plummer and changed her name to Plummer. The last I knew she lived in Everett and cared for her- half sister, who was An invalid. John Carr went to Chicago and then to a ranch in the west, I think either Wyo- ing or Idaho. He is married and has several children. Hannah and, Emma Boutwell I think are both married and live in Illinois. Willis Boutwell was a merchant in Boston and died several years ago leaving no children. Edward Boutwell was a physician and died as a young man leaving no children." In 1829 Deacon Paschal Abbott married for his second wife, Hannah Foster, born June 18, 1796 and died in 1883. Their children were: Hannah Lucretia Abbott, born Sept. 27, 1830. Paschal G., born Jan. 20, 1833; died Sept. 7, 1834. Isaac F., born Sept. 3, 1834. Paschal G., born April 25, and died Nov. 20, 1836. Milton L., born Oct. 21, 1837, in Andover, Mass. Paschal Job, born Sept. 22, 18392 in Andover, Mass. Paschal Abbott must have returned to Andover to live since in the Dex- ter records of deaths the birthplace of the last two children is given as An- dover. Hannah Lucretia Abbott married Deacon Horace Moulton, born in 1830 and died in 1878. They had five chil- dren: Mary Ruth Moulton, born June 13, 1862. Nellie Foster Moulton, born Aug- ust 23, 1864. Alice Abbott Moulton, born July 9, 1867; died May 13, 1882. George Abbott Moulton, born Feb. 16, 1869. Wilbur Boutwell Moulton, born July.17, 1871. The Moultons lived in Sanbornton and Tilton, New Hampshire. The two older daughters were teachers "and for many years were in Southern California" writes Dr. Abbott, "but I think they are now living in Tilton". In 1889, George A. Moulton mar- ried Addie Clark, and they have two daughters: Bernice A. Moulton, born July 4, .1890 and Esther L. Moulton, born March 2, 190l. They lived in Tilton, N. H., or not far from there. Wilbur B. Moulton is married and lives in Tilton but has no children. After her husband's death Mrs. Moulton and her family spent the winter of 1880-81 in Dexter and the children attended the Dexter schools. Some of their schoolmates will re- member them. May H. Moulton was awarded the first prize for essays in the spring of 1831 at the Dexter High school. Isaac F. Abbott never married. Dr. Abbott says of him: "He was a wool commission merchant in Boston and for many years made his home at the old Tremont hotel. He died at our house (in Dexter) about 1880 and is buried at Dexter in our lot". (In Mount Pleasant cemetery). Of Paschal Abbott's son Milton, we wiII write next week. Paschal Job Abbott, youngest child of Deacon Pischal and Hannah Ab- bott, married Abbie Gray, born in 1839 and died in 1917. Marriage in- tentions between "Mr. Paschal J. Ab- bott and Miss Abbie Gray, both of Dexter," will be found in the Dexter records. They were married in Dex- ter March 24, 1860, by Rev. L. King- man. They had one son, Charles B. Abbott, who was born in 1864, in Dexter, Maine. He married Dora L. Mills who was born in 1866. They have lived in Lowell, Mass., for a number of years. They have no chil- dren. Paschal J. Abbott and his wife, Abbie, were earnest workers in the Dexter Congregational church and are pleasantly remembered by some of their fellow workers. He was em- ployed at the Abbott woolen mill for a number of years. Later he engag- ed in the manufacture of men's cloth- ing, principally "pants". He was usually called by his second name, Job. His cousin, Job Abbott, son of Jeremiah, was some years older than he and a much larger man, physically. To distinguish between them one was known as "Big Job Abbott' and the other as "Little Job Abbott". But in later years these adjectives were dis- carded and they were "Job" and "P. Paschal J. Abbott died in Dexter June 23, 1907, at the age of 67 years and 9 months. P. J. and his wife Abbie, are buried at Mount Pleasant cemetery in the family lot previously mentioned, as are also the father, Paschal, and his wife, Hannah.
