LOCAL HISTORY COLUMN Edited by Mrs. Annie W. Murphy and Miss Mary H. Hamilton Contributors solicited The Abbotts Four brothers who came to Dexter soon after its incorporation exerted a strong and lasting influence on the life and character of the town. They were Paschal, Jeremiah, Amos and Joshua Abbott, sons of, Nathan Ab- bott of Andover, Mass., and his wife, Sarah (Bullard) Abbott. They trace their ancestry back to George Abbott of Andover who came from England in 1637 and settled in Massachusetts. From volume 85 of the New Eng- land Historical and Genealogical Register, published in January 1931, we quote the following in regard to the ancestry of George Abbott of An- dover: "The earliest known ancestor of George Abbott, who came to New England in 1637, and, after living for a few years at Roxbury, Mass., set- tled at Andover, Mass., where he was the founder of a well-known family, was Williai-n Abbott of Bishops-Stort- ford, County Herts, England, who was born about 1470". "The surname ABBOTT is, of course derived from the title of ab- bot, which was borne by the head of a monastery; and there have been numerous different famliies of the name in various parts of England, of totally distinct origins, as is usual in the case of family names derived from offices, occupations, or patrony- mics. Such surnames came into use in England about the time of King Edward I (1272-1307)". "Bishops-Stortford, the home of at least five generations of the paternal ancestors of George Abbott of Rox- bury and Andover, Mass., is a thriv- ing market town and parish about thirty miles north-east from London, on the extreme eastern border of Hertfordshire, adjoining the county of Essex". "Tbe descent of George Abbott of Roxbury and Andover, Mass., pro- genitor of a numerous New England family, from William Abbott of Bis- hops-Stortford, county , Herts, who lived about 1470-1532, is set forth in the following pedigree. 1. Wliliam Abbott of Bishops- Stortford, Co. Herts, born about 1470, was living as late as Nov. 21, 1532. The name of his wife is unknown". "While no positive proof has been discovered that he had a family, it is probable that he was father of at least one child, John, born about 1495. 2. John Abbott, of Bishops-Stort- ford, born about 1495, was living as late as 1545. The name of his wife is unknown. Children: John, born about 1520; buried at Bisbops-Stortford April 8, 1570; mar- ried about 1543, Joane Carrowe, daughter of Thomas and Joane Car- rowe. William, born about 1525 and prob- ably named for his grandfather. 3. William Abbott, of Bishops- Stortford, born about 1525; died in March 1569. He married about 1550, Margaret -. His children were: George, born at Bishops-Stortford, Co. Herts, about 1550; John, Robert, Thomas. 4. George Abbott of Bishops- Stortford, Co. Herts, yeoman, born at Bisbops-Stortford about 1550, was buried Jan. 11, 1619-20. He mar- ried about 1576, Bridget----,who was buried Aug. 13, 1625. George Abbott succeeded to the homestead of his father according to the latter's will". He had eight children: George, baptized July 17, 1577; buried Aug. 10, 1577. John, Anne, Johanne, Grace, George, bap- tized May 28, 1587, Johane, Edward. 5. George Abbott of Bishops- Stortford, Co. Herts, baptized May 28, 1587 , was living there as late as 1628, when his child Christopher was born . ......... He married about 1615 Elizabeth ----. He succeeded to the homestead farm formerly of his grand- father and father, according to the latter's will, of which he was the sole executor. Children, recorded at Bishops-Stort- ford: George, 'George Abbot son of George and Elizabeth baptized May xxij th 1617'. Edward, John, Chris- topher, baptized Nov. 2, 1628. 6. George Abbott, of Bishops- Stortford, Co. Herts, and of Roxbury and Andover, Mass., baptized at Bis- hops-Stortford May 22, 1617, died at Andover, Mass., Dec. 24, 1681. He married at Roxbury, Mass., Dec. 12, 1646, Hannah Chandler, baptized at Bishops-Stortford May 22, 1630, died June 2, 1711, in her 82d year, daugh- ter of William and Annis (Bayford) Chandler, who brought her to New England in 1637".. "About the time George Abbott came of age, he emigrated to New England, coming, according to a tra- dition among his descendants which was published nearly a century ago, in the same ship which brought the family of Hannah Chandler, whom he married a few years later. As it is now proved that he came from the same place in England as the Chand- lers, the tradition that he accompani- ed them may be considered to be cor- rect; therefore his emigration took place in 1637, as the church rec- ords of Roxbury state that the Chand- lers came in that year. Doubtless the influence and preaching of Rev. John Eliot were responsible for the emigration to New England of George Abbott, as they were for the emigration of many of the early settlers of Rox- bury. George Abbott lived for a few years at Roxbury, but, when a new planta- tion was planned at Andover, in 1643, he became one of the first proprie- tors and settlers of that town. He lived at first in the northern section of the town, but about 1660 be es- tablished a farm in the South Parish, part of which still continues in the family."
