Obituary
Dr. Mary J. Baynum The many friends of Dr. Mary J. Baynum will be saddened to learn of her death which took place at the home of her niece, Mrs. F. H. LaBree, in this town Saturday afternoon, July 14. For several years Dr. Baynum has been in failing health having suffered several slight shocks, but lately had appeared as well as usual. Late in the afternoon Mrs. Proctor, a sister, heard Dr. Baynum call to her and hastening to render any assistance, found the patient breathing heavily. Within a short time the sufferer had passed away. Dr. Baynum was born in Dexter, October 10, seventy-three years ago, being the daughter of Nathaniel and Adeline Bryant. She was married in early life to Dr. William R. Baynum and resided in Newport. After the death of her husband, Dr. Baynum studied medicine, graduating from Boston University's medical college with high honors and entering into practice in Boston. Later, Dr. Baynum came to Dexter where she continued practice of medicine until failing health compelled her to give up an active life. She was well beloved by many acquaintances. She leaves a sister, Mrs. Proctor of Dexter, also a niece, Mrs. F. H. LaBree, of this town. Memorial services were held Tuesday afternoon, Rev. Stanley Gates Spear officiating. Mrs. S. L. Small sang, "Thy Will be Done" and "There is a Land." Wassookeag chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, read its impressive burial service, many members being present. The bearers were Geo. A. Dustin, Arthur P. Abbott, Freeman Dearth and F. J. Carsley. There were many beautiful floral offerings, burial being in the family lot in Mt. Pleasant cemetery. Dr. Baynum was a communicant of the Episcopal church and a member of Wassookeag chapter, Order of the Eastern Star. In this organization she served as worthy matron and later as chaplain. Many friends will miss her kindness and thoughtfulness and will remember her as ever ready to give aid and strength whenever it was possible. The Eastern Gazette 7-19-1917, p.5 MARY H. (BRYANT) BAYNUM Mary H. Bryant was the daughter of Nathaniel and Adeline (Putnam) Bryant, who was born in Dexter, October 10, 1843 and died in that town on July 14, 1917. She taught several schools in town including the upper intermediate, under the town hall, and the grammar school. She was a good teacher and successful in the work. She married Dr. William H. Baynum, a homeopathic physician, who was for a time settled in Dexter where he died on December 27, 1880. They had one child Frankie, who died at the age of six years. After her husband's death, Mrs. Baynum studied medicine and was a practicing physician in Dexter until failing health forced her to retire. She is pleasantly remembered by those pupils who were privileged to attend her schools. The Eastern Gazette 11-16-1944, p.3 (LHC)
