Obituary
SAD SKATING FATALITY Lester Cole Drowned in Lake Was- sookeag Many Dexter people were saddened by the death from drowning of Lester Cole, an employee at the Fay & Scott shops, the accident occurring in the waters of Lake Wassookeag, when the young man skated into open water near the float bridge last Thursday. At a considerable distance away were other skaters on the ice who skated rapidly to the spot and ventured as near to the young man as the strength of the ice permitted. They attempted by the use of sweaters to give Mr. Cole something which he could grasp and retain until other assistance had arrived, but all efforts were to no avail. In response to cries for help arrived Willis Ayer and other men who placed a long board on the ice and this the unfortunate man grasped and lifted himself almost out of the water when overcome by numbness he loosened his grasp and fell backward. Men from the Fay & Scott shops grappled for the body for a considerable period of time, but were obliged to give up the endeavor until Friday morning, when their efforts were rewarded. Hutchinson & Gates were placed in charge of the body and conveyed it to their un- dertaking rooms on Main street to await the arrival of the young man's father. Lester Cole was about 21 years of age and was well liked by his associates at the Fay & Scott shops. During the recent illness of three or four of his friends at the Fay-Scott Inn, Mr. Cole was untiring in his care of them and was ever ready to be of service. It is understood that the young an is survived only by his father, the mother having died a few years ago. Mr. Cole was a native of East Corinth He was a member of Co. M, Third Maine regiment having been engaged during Thursday evening in drill at the armory prior to walking to Lake Wassookeag to participate in the skating.
