Besides his widow, he leaves two children, Lowell and Helen. Mr. Palmer was a man of excellent character, an intellectual man, who had served very successfully as superintendent of schools here, at Bar Harbor and at other places, a pleasant man to meet and a man beloved by his family and friends. Palmer, son of Benjamin and Julia B. (Clark) Palmer was born in Charleston, Maine, October 12, 1877 and spent his early years there. He graduated from Bates College, Lewiston, Maine in the class of 1899, after which he took up school work. He was High School principal in the various Maine towns. For several years he was superintendent of schools in the Dexter-Garland district and during a part of that he was superintendent of the Dexter Universalist Sunday School where lie served most efficiently. He finally resigned as superintendent of the Dexter schools and accepted the superintendency of the schools in the town of Eden with headquarters at Bar Harbor. In this later town he again demonstrated his worth as a superintendent of exceptional ability and he was the recipient of many flattering offers of positions both in Maine and also in Massachusetts, carrying with them larger salaries. Ill health, however compelled him to resign his position at Bar Harbor, and early in the spring of 1817, Mr. Palmer with his family returned to Dexter, where he owned a home. Mr. Palmer was twice married. His first wife was Miss Annie Butterfield of Guilford, by whom he had one son, Lowell Butterfield Palmer. His second wife was Miss Carrie B. Tabbutt of Columbia Falls, who at the time of her marriage was teacher of music in the Dexter schools. They had one daughter, Helen V. Palmer, who married Henry Parsons. Mrs. Carrie Palmer became connected with the Dexter Post Office during Frank J. Carsley's term as Post Master and still holds a position there. At various times she has held the position of superintendent in the Universalist Church School. Mr. Palmer was widely and favorably known among educators in Maine as a man of exceptional ability Mr. Palmer served a term as president of the Maine State Teachers Association and at the time he resigned his position at Bar Harbor he was strongly talked of as the next Commisssioner of Education for the State of Maine.
