JOHN W. SPRINGALL 1858 - 1932 John W. Springall was born in Dexter, Maine, November 20, 1858, the second child of Dr. John B. Springall and Emily Jane (Abbott) Springall. Dr. Springall was born in England but came to the United States when a young man and was a graduate of Harvard Medical School. Mrs. Springall was the daughter of Amos and Mehitable (Safford) Abbott. The Springall boys, Amos and John, began clerking in the Springall Drug Store at an early age. Later John learned the jewelers' trade and in 1894 he opened a store to deal in watches, clocks, jewelry, silver-plated ware, spectacles and eye glasses. He qualified as an optitian and did a successful business of fitting glasses. He purchased the brick block erected by C. F. Witherell and continued his business here until he sold the building to Bert L. Call. Besides the local Masonic bodies, Mr. Springall was a member of Mt. Moriah Council and the DeMolay commandery of Skowhegan. Because of his ability to work in any position in an able and impressive manner he was frequently called upon to fill a chair of an absent officer . . . He was a charter member of Bedivere Lodge, K. of P. John W. Springall and Miss Jennie H. Campbell of Foxcroft were married Februray 28, 1888. The Springall family were all loyal workers in the Universalist church. Mr. Springall sang in the choir for twenty-five years. He was a deacon of the church from its organization and a trustee for forty years, being chairman of the board at the time of his death. He died in Dexter, June 5, 1932.
