Obituary
Mrs. Ellen Whittemore The Dexter friends were sorry to learn of the passing away of Mrs. Ellen Whittemore at her farm home. Mrs. Whittemore had suffered a shock and her death was not unexpected. She was born in Livermore, Me., January 16, 1839, being the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Scott. A year later the family moved to Haseltine's Corner, so-called, within four miles of Dexter, and later came to town to reside, occupying the Whittemore residence on Spring street. Here Mrs. Whittemore lived until a few years ago, when she moved to the Leighton farm on the Wassookeag road. In early life Mrs. Whittemore was united in marriage with Jacob Whittemore, the date being early in 1862, her husband leaving directly to join his regiment and three months later the bride of a few months received the communication telling of the death of her husband while engaged in battle. Mrs. Whittemore was a woman of sterling character and was deeply interested in the welfare of the boys of Good Will Farm and frequently aided in a financial manner worthy cases. She was deeply interested in church work and until failing health compelled her to retire from active duties, was a teacher in Sunday school and a worker in other departments of the church. She leaves a neice, Mrs. M. D. Church of Boston. Memorial services were held in the First Baptist church Saturday afternoon at one o'clock, the pastor of the church, Rev. R. L. Olds, officiating. Interment took place in the Whittemore lot in Elmwood cemetery, Dexter, and the bearers were Messrs. Osgood Eaton, Carrol Mower, Byron Giles and Henry Curtis.
