Obituary
Everett W. Leonard Services at the M. E. church Sunday morning, August 4th, were in memory of Exerett W. Leonard, the first to enlist from Dexter after the United States declared war on Germany and the first of the Dexter boys to be reported "Killed in Action." The service flag with the stars rearanged to accomodate the additional stars which now represent a total of twenty-six soldiers and sailors and one Y. M. C. A. secretary. The central star of the upper group being a gold star representing Bugler Exer- ett W. Leonard of Company A, 103d Infantry, who was born in Wareham, Mass., in September 1896 and killed in action in France July 13, 1918. Mr. Leonard came to Dexter in August 1916 and was employed in Fay & Scott's machine shops until May 1917, when his Company was called. He was a musician and played in the Fay & Scott band, and in the orchestra at the Methodist church. He was a favorite among his shopmates as he was in his own home circle and everywhere where he became known. He leaves to mourn his death, a father, Clarence Leonard, a mother, Florence Leonard of Wareham, Mass. three brothers, one of whom is in the navy, four sisters, and many friends, both here and in his home town. A nobler son of America has fallen in Freedom's cause. A faithful friend, a true soldier, a good bugler has heard the Assembly and responded.
