Obituary
COL. STANLEY PLUMMER Death of Prominent Citizen Takes Place At Atlantic City News was received in Dexter this morning of the death of Col. Stanley Plummer, which took place at a hospital at Atlantic City, N, J., Wednesday afternoon at 5.30 o'clock, as the re- sult of paralytic shocks received last week. Col. Plummer was born in Sangerville in 1846 and in early life came to Dexter with his parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Plummer, whose home was on Main street on the present location of the Dana Crockett building. He was educated in the Dexter schools and at Bowdoin college. During the latter part of the Civil war he served as clerk in the paymaster's department and in the years following the war held various clerkships in government departments in Washington, afterwards being appointed postmaster of the United States Senate. About 1890 he returned to Dexter and erected the present Plummer residence on High street. Governor Burleigh honored him with an appointment on his military staff with the rank of colonel. He represented this town in the Maine legislature, serving two terms in the house of representatives and one in the senate. He was prominently mentioned as a candidate for representative to congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Congressman Powers, but the claims of Piscataquis county to the repre- sentation were responsible for the selection of a man from that county. Col. Plummer was twice married, the first wife being Miss Barker of Bangor, whose death occurred some years ago. About fifteen years ago he married Miss Elizabeth Burbank of Boston, who survives him. It is expected that funeral services will be held next Sunday afternoon at the Universalist church, with Rev. W. H. Gould of Turner, a former pastor of the church, as officiating clergyman. The Eastern Gazette 2-13-1919, p.5 THE HON. STANLEY PLUMMER 1846 - 1919 Stanley Plummer was born in Sangerville, Maine, February 25, 1846, the son of Daniel and Miranda Martha Oakes Plummer. The family moved to Dexter in 1851, where Daniel Plummer engaged in the business of carpenter and builder for more than twenty years, so Stanley's boyhood was largely spent in that town, and there he began his formal education. He received the degree of A. B. from Bowdoin College in 1867, and LL.B. from Albany Law School in 1868, and was admitted to the Bar in 1869. Mr. Plummer married Evelyn Barker of Stetson in 1871. He was a member of the Maine House of Representatives in 1869 and 1895, and of the Maine Senate in 1899 and 1903. He began the practice of law in Bangor in 1872 and was City Solicitor of Bangor in 1873. He was Clerk of United States Department of Internal Revenue in 1874-1876. He was United States Revenue Agent from 1877 to 1889, and Postmaster of the United States Senate from 1890 to 1894. Mr. Plummer practiced law in Skowhegan in 1888 and 1889, but in 1893 he returned to make his home in Dexter. In 1903 he married Miss Elizabeth Burbank of Rockford, Illinois. They made their home in the house on High Street which was built by his father. Mr. Plummer died here February 12, 1919. Mr. Plummer's will gave to the town of Dexter this house on High Street and it became the nucleus of the present Plummer Memorial Hospital. Mr. Plummer was a member of Plymouth Lodge, I. O. O. F., of H. F. Safford Post, G. A. R. and a member of the Board of Trustees of the Abbott Memorial Library. We, as inhabitants of the Town of Dexter, have reason to be grateful to Mr. Plummer for his most excellent work in the preparation of the manuscript history of Dexter.
