Obituary	Mrs. Elizabeth R. Horton Mrs. Elizabeth R. Horton, one of the town's oldest and most beloved residents, died at 5 o'clock Sunday afternoon at her home here, after an illness of but four days. Though her extreme age, 90 years and seven months, and the serious nature of her illness had prepared her scores of friends for the end, her death is no less a shock and saddening influence to the whole community. Known and respected by all and deeply loved by her most intimate friends her loss comes as a great blow to those who had the good fortune of her acquaintance. Despite her age, Mrs. Horton had been, until a short time before her death, most active in the educative, and religious organizations of the town. She was a charter member and a former president of the Woman's Literary club and, on the occasion of her last birthday, was entertained by the other members at the home of Col. and Mrs. Stanley Plummer. Until this winter's snow prevented her, she continued a regular attendant at the services of the Universalist church, where she was an honoree member and a highly respected worker. She also made it a point to be present at the regular meetings of the Ladies' Literary club. Mrs. Horton's maiden name was Elizabeth Jacobs and she was the daughter of the late Dr. Isaac Jacobs, for many years a well-known physician in Bangor, coming to Maine from Massachusetts. At the time of Mrs. Horton's birth, 1825, Mr. and Mrs. Jacobs were living in Exeter, but moved to Bangor when she was only eight years old, so that she received her education in the schools of that city, living there for 30 years. In August, 1863, she was married to Benjamin Horton of Dexter, formerly of Boston, and came here to live where she resided ever since, for 52 years, 51 years of which time her home has been in the house where she was living at the time of her death. Her only near survivor is her daughter, Mrs. Charles F. Flynt of Augusta, though there are four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; also, she was the grand aunt of Miss Addie B. Stockwell, now residing at Orono, and Amos Stockwell of Camden. Two winters, one before her marriage and one since, Mrs. Horton was in the South and she travelled quite extensively in other sections of the country. She was a woman of unusual intelligence, well read on many subjects and a very interesting companion. In speaking of the advancement of te times during her lifetime Mrs. Horton often told of an experience which probably no other person in Maine can boast. It was witnessing the erection of the first telegraph line, that which was run between Herkimer and Utica, N. Y. She was riding on the New York Central Railroad at the time, just as the trial line was being run by Morse. She remembered, too, of seeing the first locomotive which entered Bangor. Funeral services were held from the home on Grove street, Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock, Rev. Stanley Gates Spear, pastor of the First Universalist church, officiating. The members of the Woman's Literary club of which the deceased was for many years an active and influential member, attended the services in a body. The house was filled with club members and friends. The bearers were Dana Crockett, Arthur P. Abbott, Amos A. Springall and John W. Springall. The out of town people here to attend the funeral were Charles F. Flynt, and Leigh Flynt of Augusta; Charles W. Flynt of Hallowell; Roy H. Flynt of Malden, Mass.; Mrs. Charles Floyd Smith, Winthop; Amos Stockwell of Camden and Addie Stockwell of Orono.
