Thomas A. Chandler Thomas A. Chandler, one of the oldest inhabitants of Dexter, and a life-long resident of this town, passed away Tuesday afternoon at the home of Mr. and Mrs. R. M. Barton, where he has made his home since last November. Mr. Chandler was born in this town eighty-one years ago, July 31, and with the exception of a very few years spent in Ripley, he has resided here. In early life he was united in marriage to Annie Whittemore also of this town, her death taking place several years ago. For more than forty-three years Mr. Chandler was engaged in the con-fectionery and grocery business, his store being located on the lot where the J. W. Springall jewelry store now stands, and for seven years prior to his opening of a business of his own be had acted a clerk for other merchants, making more than fifty years he was behind the counter serving the public in a most conscientious manner, always having a cheery greeting and kindly smile for everyone. He was one of the oldest members of Plymouth Lodge, I. 0. 0. F., and was a charter member of Martha Washington Rebekah Lodge, he being a valued member of each order and having filled all the officers chairs of the Plymouth lodge he was very familiar with the work of Odd Fellowship. Although not a member of any church he was a regular attendant at the Baptist church when in good health and was deeply interested in the welfare of the church. Three sisters survive, Mrs. R. M. Barton of Dexter, Mrs. Charles Additon of Corinna and Mrs. Elwin Macomber of Good Will Farm. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o' clock at the Baptist church. Chandler were held at the First Baptist church Friday forenoon at 10 o'clock and many friends gathered to pay their final respect to the deceased. The service was conducted by Rev. G. C. Sauer, pastor of the church. Many beautiful flowers were arranged about the casket, showing the high esteem and respect of many friends. Interment was made in the Storer cemetery and the bearers were Nathan Daggett, Samuel Moore, Wilson Hamilton and Winfield S. Twombly. The Eastern Gazette 7-31-1919, p.5 THOMAS ALDEN CHANDLER 1838 - 1919 Thomas A. Chandler was born in Ripley, July 31, 1838 and died in Dexter, July 22, 1919. He was the son of Harvey Chandler and his first wife, Sarah A. Morrill, daughter of Deacon Morrill of the First Baptist church of Dexter. Mr. Chandler was associated with his Uncle Josiah Chandler in his grocery business in Dexter and after his uncle retired from the business Thomas carried on alone. He was located for many years in a small wooden building on Main Street on the site of the present Call Studio brick block. The Chandler store went in the fire that also destroyed the Roberts' building and the Mercantile block on February 22, 1907. Because of an illness in his youth, Mr. Chandler was obliged to depend upon crutches to get about, but he never complained and he always did a man's work in the world. Mr. Chandler married Annie A. Whittemore of Dexter. Mr. Chandler married Annie A. Whittemore, daughter of John Q. and Leoneise F. Whittemore of Dexter. Mrs. Chandler carried on a millinery business in Dexter for a long time and won the good will of her customers by her upright dealing and sympathetic understanding of their needs.
