Obituary
Harold B. Knox dead Dexter - Harold B. Knox, a member of Dexter's police force for 31 years and the town's first chief, died Tuesday in Bangor after a long illness. He was 60. A life-long resident of Dexter, he retired from the police department due to his illness on March 1, 1977. More than 120 friends, guests and police chiefs from surrounding cities honored him with a testimonial dinner on the occasion. Only a month before, he was given a special Community Achievement Award by the Dexter Development Association at their annual banquet. Knox graduated from high school at the age of 16, and assisted his father on their farm on the Charleston Road, and after his father's death operated the farm. He worked on Lynn Jewett's milk route, was employed by several other concerns including Fay and Scott Machine Shop where he was guard for a time. He served as spare constable and later was asked to take over duties of chief by one of the 10 town managers under whom he has served. He had not taken one day of sick leave until his retirement, despite the fact that he has had about 17 different bones broken during his years of service. He had been particularly proud that six of the officers who had worked under him had gone on to become troopers with the Maine State Police. He has always had two jobs, working elsewhere on his off-duty hours. Since 1954, he and his wife, the former Donna Williams of Dexter, have made motor trips during his vacations and have visited every state except Hawaii and Alaska. They have lived for many years in the Knox Manor, their 135-year-old 17-room home on Zion's Hill where they let a four-room furnished apartment and five single rooms with their 6-year old Doberman Pincher, Mika and a black cat for company. Born in Dexter, June 29, 1917, son of George and Edith (Joslyn) Knox, he was a past president of the Maine Chief of Police Association, and a former director and life member of the New England Police Chief's Association. He was a 32nd degree Mason, and a member of the DeMolay of Skowhegan and the Commandry. In addition to his wife, he is survived by one sister, Mrs. Walter (Marion) Knox, and one brother, Merle, both of Dexter; two nephews and three nieces. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m., Thursday at the Universalist Church here, with the Rev. Robert Sterling officiating. Calling hours at the Crosby Funeral Home are Wednesday (June 7), from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Masonic services Wednesday at 7 p.m., at the Funeral Home. Burial will be at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Dexter.
