Obituary
Charles Edgar Jones Monday noon, April 4th, at his home in West Ripley, C. E. Jones passed on to the reward of a life well lived. If those of us here who knew him well could judge that reward it would be in large measure, for to know him was to respect, admire and love him. His was a clean and wholesome life, free from envy or bitterness and filled with friendship and devotion to worthwhile ideals. The obedient and loyal son had become the loving and exemplary husband, the comrade father, the faithful friend and neighbor. "Edgar" Jones had no enemies, for he held nothing in his heart but good will towards men. His law was the Golden Rule and no Statute law conflicted therewith. He was ever ready to respond to a call of distress, be it from man or beast. To this many people can testify and his animals daily bespoke in appearance. The sympathy of a wide circle goes out to the little family stricken so suddenly. Although in feeble health for several months high hope had been held in the possible effect of the coming of warm weather and more out-of-doors life for Mr. Jones. He had met the difficulties of illness with the same uncomplaining bravery that had characterized his life. Edgar was the son of George and Julia Jones of Ripley, and was born on the farm where he died. Three generations of his family had preceded him there. They had cleared it from the wilderness, and each had done his part to bring it to its present state of cultivation and attractiveness. Here is a typical New England farm home such as bespeak good citizenship and true Americanism. Edgar was born August 26th, 1855, and was married to Miss Alice M. Laughton of Harmony, April 1, 1896, in Boston, by the Rev. Minot Savage. One son, Charles E. Jr., was born to them. This son was 25 on April 6th. By a former wife, Mr. Jones had a daughter, Josephine, now the wife of Harry Seavey of Dexter. They have three daughters. With the widow, son, daughter and granddaughters, an elderly uncle, William Jones, and two aunts, Mrs. Louisa Sampson and Mrs. Sarah Winslow, are left to mourn. The uncle is 80 years old, Mrs. Sampson 85 and Mrs. Winslow nearly 90. One who knew him best pays Edgar Jones this tribute: "No kinder heart ever beat than his-liberal to a fault and the soul of honor; the most devoted man to his home, though he never forgot or neglected others-whole-hearted, whole-souled Edgar." Mr. Jones was a member of Plymouth Lodge, I. 0. 0. F., and a charter member of Ripley Grange. He was a model farmer and loved his home, his farm animals and handsome fields. Funeral services were at the home, Thursday afternoon, Apr. 7th, Rev. McIntire of the Dexter Universalist church officiating. The floral tributes were many and beautiful. Interment was in the family lot at West Ripley.
