Obituary
Joseph Fitzgerald The death of Joseph H. Fitzgerald occurred in his home in Old Town Friday morning after being confined to his bed two weeks, the result of a fall down the cellar stairs. Two weeks ago he stumbled and fell backwards down the stairs and although no bones were broken he received a bad shaking up. Mr. Fitzgerald was born in Dexter October 3, 1836, and received his education in the public schools When a young man he went to work in the machine shop with his father who started the first machine shop in Dexter and who made the first looms that were put into the mills of the Brown Manufacturing Company in Dover, also Mayo's mill in Foxcroft. In the year 1857 he and his brother, Geo. F. Fitzgerald formed a co-partnership, and carried on the business until 1865, when they sold out to N. Dustin & Sons. He worked in Oakland two years and in 1889 went to Old Town where he was employed as master machinic by the Old Town Woolen Co. until last May when he was obliged to retire on account of poor health. He was a member of the Woolen Overseers association of Eastern Maine which was organized in 1897 and of which he was president two years. He has been a regular attendant at the meetings which were held annually and only missed one meeting which was last year. He was a member of Star in the East lodge, F. & A. M., and Plymouth lodge, I. 0. 0. F. of Dexter. In 1858 he was married to Miss Olive A. Smith of St. Albans, Me. whose death occurred nine years ago. Six children were born to them, four of whom survive, Mrs. A. C. Vickery of Fairfield, Miss Carrie M. Fitzgerald of Old Town, Mrs. Harry W. Chapman of Old Town and Mrs. Harry M. Daniels of Caribou, the latter being ill and unable to come to the funeral. He is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Harry F. Baker, of Dorcester, Mass., who have the sympathy of their many friends in their sorrow. The funeral services were held in his late home Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock.
