Obituary
BENJAMIN F ELDRIDGE 1830-1894 Benjamin Franklin Eldridge was born in 1830 the son of William and Elizabeth D (Swanton) Eldridge, who settled on a farm up in District Number Ten. Of their children, William, Samuel, Benjamin, Elizabeth (Mrs. Mower and later Mrs. Carr) and Lavina (Mrs. George A. Abbott) all lived in Dexter. The Eldridge boys were all carpenters and used to working in wood, and early in the 1860s Samuel was working in the Curtis shop for his cousin, Charles W. Curtis. (Their mothers were sisters.) Mr. Curtis needed help in running the business and Samuel Eldridge bought a third interest. Five or six years later, Benjamin Eldridge bought a third interest and a few years later, Mr. Curtis retired from the firm and it was continued by the other two under the firm name of Eldridge Brothers. The Eldridges were all good reliable citizens and always interested in the welfare of the Town. Benjamin Eldridge was twice married. His second wife was Marcia Ella Hewitt of Garland, daughter of Hiram and Charlotte (Pierce) Hewitt. They had four children, Carrie, Charles S., Benjamin Franklin, and Susan L. Eldridge. None are now living (1944). Mr. Eldridge was a member of the State Board of Commissioners at the time of his death, which occurred while on a business trip connected with his business. Mr. and Mrs. Eldridge were both earnest workers in the Universalist Church.
