CHILD KILLED BY TRUCK Little Melba Bugbee Victim of a Sad Accident Monday The entire town of Dexter was saddened by the sad accident which occurred Monday morning when little Melba, the four-year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Shirley Bugbee of lower Main street was killed by being run over by the Ford truck of Noyes & Hall, which was being driven by Guy Hall and which was loaded with empty cans from the storehouse on Lincoln street which were being transferred to the canning factory on Water street. The little girl was on her way from her home on Main street to the home of her grandmother, Mrs. Fred Jewett, on Orchard street. In order to follow the sidewalk to her destination the child had to cross the street twice. She had reached the corner of Main and Lincoln street and stepped out into the street just as the truck came along. To avoid a rough place in the road, the truck driver had swung over to the left of the travelled way and did not see the child until too late to stop. The front of the car struck the girl in the back of the head, knocking her down and bruising her face. As far as known, the wheels did not run over her body. It is said that the car stopped in the space of 20 feet. She was taken to the home of William Robinson nearby, but died within a few minutes. Her head was lacerated and her chest terribly crushed. The parents of the little girl are nearly frantic with grief over the loss of their little one and have the sincere sympathy of a large circle of friends. Tragic ill fortune has seemed to follow the Bugbee family during the past few years, a brother of the little girl's father having died two years ago as a result of an accident while employed on a wood sawing machine, one of his arms being torn away. Shirley Bugbee, father of the little girl, is a veteran of the World war, being seriously shell shocked overseas and having never fully recovered from its effects. County Attorney Weatherbee arrived from Bangor this afternoon to hold a hearing to fix the responsibility for the accident.
