Obituary
DEATH OF OLIVER CROSBY When a Young Man Settled in St. Paul, Minn., and Became Mil- lionaire News was received here Friday of the death in St. Paul, Minn., of Oliver Crosby, millionaire manufacturer and a native of this town. Death was after a long period of ill health, being caused by pernicious anemia. The deceased was the eldest son of the late Hon. Josiah Crosby and Mrs. Crosby and was born in this town 67 years ago. Mr. Crosby graduated from the U. of M. in the class of 1876 and when a young man went west and has been one of the many Maine men who have made a success of business in that section of the country. Mr. Crosby was connected with the American Hoist and Derrick Co. being president of the corporation at the time of his death. He has been the prime mover in this enterprise for many years and has seen the business grow from a small beginning to one of great size and importance. The deceased was prominent in the Business circles of St. Paul and Minneapolis and his home on one of the principal residential streets of St. Paul, was one of the show places of the twin cities. The success that he attained and the amassing of a fortune did not cause Mr. Crosby to forget his native town and Dexter has benefited in many ways by his interest and generosity. Crosby Park, named in honor of his father, and mother, is a lasting monument to his love and interest in his home town. Every summer saw his return to Maine and it always included a visit to the place of his boyhood days at the Crosby homestead on Zion's Hill. Besides a widow, Mrs. Elizabeth Crosby, the deceased is survived by three children, Frederick Crosby and Mrs. Ruth Van Ness of St. Paul and Mrs. Louise Payne, wife of Prof. Payne of Cornell University, Ithaca, N. Y. He is also survived by two brothers, J. Willis Crosby, Esq., of this town and S. P. Crosby of St. Paul, and by four sisters, Mrs. A. B. Stickney and Miss Annie Crosby who are spending the winter at San Diego, Cal., and Mrs. J. W. Bird of Anacortes, Washington, and Mrs. Chas. Altenburg of Fairmont, Minn. Funeral services and burial were in St. Paul.
