Obituary
Miss Sarah J. Bement A telegram was received in Augusta November 20, reporting the passing away of Miss Sarah J. Bement, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Judson W. Bement, Hayward, Calif., November 18. Miss Bement went to California several months ago, accompanying Mrs. P. E. Smith in whose home in Augusta she had lived for many years. On arrival in California she visited at the home of her brother Judson W. Bement in Hayward. Miss Bement was born in Dexter about 75 years ago and was educated here. When a young woman she went to Augusta and entered the employ of Fowler, Hamlen & Smith dry goods concern and remained there with that company until the business was sold out. She was not employed for a year or so, after the Fowler, Hamlen & Smith Co.,sold out, but passed the time with her elder brother, a captain on a vessel in a voyage which took them to Cardiff, Wales. After returning to Maine she entered the employ of the Bussell & Weston Cc. Although not a member of any order by affiliated with any church, Miss Bement was a woman of sterling character and had a wide circle of friends. She was considered one of the best informed authorities in the local trade. She made and retained lifelong friends. She was optimistic in her views of life, possessing a happy disposition and recent letters received from her were written in cheerful vein with no premonition of ill health. News of her death came as a shock to her many friends.
