Andrew J. Knowles Andrew J. Knowles, for 30 years a resident of this town, died last Thursday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Winfield S. Twombly of Free street at the age of 83. The deceased was born in Corinna, Dec. 18, 1840 and spent the early years of his life in that town. During his active years in this town he conducted a boarding house on Spring street. Mr. Knowles was an active member of the Methodist church and a highly respected citizen, with many friends who mourn his death. Besides his daughter, he is survived by a son, Rev. Herbert D. Knowles, pastor of the Methodist church in Sullivan, also by a brother, Edwin S. Knowles, of Newport. Funeral services were held from the home of his daughter, Mrs. Twombly, on Free street Sunday afternoon at 1 o'clock. Out of town friends and relatives present at the services were his son, Rev. Herbert D. Knowles, of Sullivan, Rev. J. R. Clifford of Kennebunkport, G. W. Booker and John S. Philbrick, Corinna, Mrs. Mabel Capen, Skowhegan and Louis Kidder of Sullivan. The services were in charge of a former pastor of the Methodist church Rev. J. R. Clifford, who made brief remarks with Scripture by Rev. D. P. Pelley, present pastor of the Methodist church. Rev. J. R. Clifford gave a brief history of Mr. Knowles' church life and made very comforting remarks to relatives and friends. Two solos, Face to Face and A Christian's Good Night were beautifully rendered by Rev. Mr. Clifford. Burial was in the family lot at Corinna Center. The bearers were Messrs. Nathan Daggett, John Katen, Charles A. Bugbee and Jesse Hoyt.
