G. FRED ELIOT DROWNED Seized With Cramp While Bathing in Lake Wassookeag and Perishes Before Daughter's Eyes A drowning tragedy which shocked the community occurred at Waldheim late yesterday afternoon, when G. F. Eliot lost his life in the waters of Lake Wassookeag while swimming. With his daughter, Charlotte, and her girl chum, Miss Althea Mower, Mr. Eliot was bathing and was teaching the girls to swim. He struck out from the shore a little distance and was suddenly seen to be struggling and called for help. The girls tried to push a boat out to him, but as there were no oars in it, failed to reach him before he sank. Their screams brought Charles Brewster and Favor Haines, who were at cottages near by and they dove repeatedly into the.water in the effort to find the body. After some minutes work they located it and brought it to the shore and efforts at resuscitation and first aid were begun while medical assistance was being secured. A telephone message to the village brought Drs. Whalen and Hammond to the scene, but all was in vain. Mr. Eliot was 48 years of age and a prominent business man in this town, being proprietor and manager of the Dexter Bakery, and well known throughout this section. He is sur- vived by his wife, Mrs. Marion Ireland Eliot, two children, Robert and Charlotte, and a sister, Mrs. Charles Batchelder of St. Albans.
