Obituary
HIRAM CARR 1818 - 1883 Hiram Carr was born in Newbury, New Hampshire, April 10, 1808, and came to Dexter in 1833. In 1836 he married Betsey McCrillis, who was born in Goshen, New Hampshire, August 12, 1806. She was a sister of Ozarn and Pulaksi McGrillis, early residents of Dexter. They had two children, a daughter who died in childhood and a son, Warren H. Carr. Mr. Carr was a tall, powerfully built man. We quote from an article which appeared in the papers at the time of his death: "Mr. Carr was in trade for a year or two when he first came to Dexter, in company with Mr. Ozam McCrillis, afterward his brother-in-law. He also commenced the manufacture of scythe snaths about this time, and continued in that business for some thirty years, his shop being in the basement of the building formerly occupying the site of the brick building built by Samuel L Small on Main Street. He made the snaths himself, and sold them in this part of the State as far as the Kennebec region. Visiting personally so many towns through a long series of years, he became widely known and being square in his dealings, he is pleasantly remembered, by all his fromer customers." Mr. Carr was a trustee of the Dexter Savings Bank and held several town offices.
