Obituary
Joseph P. Eaton It was with deepest regret that Dexter relatives and friends learned of the sudden death of Joseph P. Eaton, which occurred at his home in Sharon, Mass., Wednesday, Sept. 12. Although for many years a resident of Massachusetts, Mr. Eaton was a frequent visitor here, and never forgot his old friends and associates. Joseph P. Eaton was born in Dexter July 30, 1872, the son of the late Warren and Ellen Batchelder Eaton. He received his education in the Dexter schools. About forty years ago he went to Massachusetts, where after several years' experience in various packing houses, he engaged in business for himself. At the time of his death he was owner and manager of Hanover Beef Co., a wholesale house, in Boston. He also conducted a retail business of similar nature. He was a director of the Cooperative Bank of Sharon and a member of the Special Finance committee of that bank. Mr. Eaton was married in 1906 to Miss Izah Mitchell, R. N., of Cambridge, Maine, who survives him. He is also survived by three daughters, the Misses Helen and Ruth Eaton and Mrs. Gordon Smith, and by one son, Joseph P. Eaton, Jr., all of Sharon. Besides these, he leaves two brothers, Charles W. Eaton of Brookville, Mass., and Walter N. Eaton of Dexter, one sister, Mrs. Mary E. Sawyer of Dexter, and several nieces and nephews. An aged step-mother, Mrs. Thankful Eaton, to whom he was devoted, also survives. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon in the Sharon Baptist church of which he was a devoted member, being for many years a deacon and superintendent of the church school. The church was completely filled with sorrowing relatives and friends. His employees attended the services in a body, and a large delegation of his business associates in Boston filled the center of the church. The beautiful flowers, in great profusion, offered silent testimony to the respect in which the deceased was held. A man of sterling character, devoted to his family, loyal to his friends, thoughtful of all, an earnest Christian, Mr. Eaton will be long remembered and respected by all who knew him. He was brought to Dexter, his native town, where services were held Monday forenoon in the Methodist church of which he was formerly a member. Rev. E. Mercer officiated. Interment was in Mt. Pleasant cemetery.
