Obituary
Charles Towle Dies Suddenly Charles Gorham Towle, 71, highly respected citizen of this town, died suddenly Friday night at his home on Forest street, after an illness of 10 weeks. Born in Augusta, the son of J. R. and Lizzie R. Towle, the deceased moved to Dexter 40 years ago and has resided in this town ever since, being employed as shipping clerk by Amos Abbott Co. He was a member of the First Universalist church and prominently identified with the Royal Arcanum Lodge. He served as secretary of the Dexter club for many years. A citizen of the most substantial type, his willingness to help others at all times and his gentle and even disposition endeared him to a wide circle of friends and acquaintances. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Walter L. Dudley, Dexter; a brother, George M. Towle, Worcester, Mass., and a grandson, Robert C. Dudley, Dexter. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the Universalist church and were largely attended and the floral offerings spoke impressively of the love and esteem in which the deceased was held. The officiating clergyman, Rev. Stanley Gates Spear of Beverly, Mass., a former pastor of the church of which the deceased was for many years a valued member, spoke feelingly of his deep friendship for the departed and the loss which his going means to the entire community. The six active bearers were Fred Abbott, Charles Wyman, Nathan Daggett, Harry E. Hale and Dr. L. E. Kelley, all of Dexter and Charles Lawry of Fairfield. Honorary bearers were Omar Carr, Peter S. Plouff, N. C. Bucknam, Herbert M. Gates, Charles Ryan and Forest Parsons. Warren K. Penley, Chas. R. Ansell and Millard G. Otto acted as ushers. Interment was at Mt. Pleasant cemetery.
