Obituary
Mrs. Lizzie Hunt Towle Mrs. Lizzie Hunt Towle of this town, formerly of Augusta and for many years prominent in State W. C. T. U. work, passed away Tuesday forenoon at the age of 91 years. For the past ten years she had made her home for the greater part of the year with her son, Charles G. Towle, on Forest street, where she died and where funeral services were held this forenoon at 10 o'clock, Rev. Leroy A. Campbell of the local Baptist church officiating. The deceased was born in Windsor July 26, 1836, the daughter of John and Susan Cleaves Hunt. Her girlhood, young womanhood and middle age were spent in Augusta, where she received her education and was married to the late Gorham R. Towle, who died about 25 years ago. Mrs. Towle retained her home in Augusta for many years, and has many friends there as well as in this town, who cherish her memory as one of those rare women who live largely for the good of their fellowrnen. Mrs. Towle's life work outside her home and church, was for the Woman' Christian Temperance Union in which she became interested early in life. She joined the Union in Augusta and always retained her membership there, though she was very active in the Union of this town. For a number of years she was State Superintendent of the work for Soldiers and Sailors, doing much for the inmates of the Soldier's Home in Togus. In her honor the Union at Togus is named the Lizzie Hunt Towle Union. Mrs. Towle, while living in Augusta, for many years conducted services at the county jail there. Early in life Mrs. Towle joined the First Baptist church of Augusta, which has since become the Penney Memorial church, and at the time of her death was still a member there, although very faithful in attendance and interested in the First Baptist church of Dexter, where she has been a teacher in the Sunday school until the past year when poor health prevented her attendance. The deceased is survived by two sons, Charles G. Towle of this town and George M. Towle, of Newport, R. I., also by two grandchildren, Mrs. Walter Dudley of Dexter and Kenneth Towle of Newport, R. 1. The remains will be taken to Augusta and placed in the Mt. Pleasant cemetery of that city.
