Obituary
C. F. Ireland Charles F. Ireland, 75, for many years a prominent business man of Penobscot County, died at his home in this town, Friday morning, after a short illness, following several months of failing health. Mr. Ireland was born in Bangor, the son of Francis Marion and Amanda Whiting Ireland. He was married in 1877 to Miss Olive Varney of Pitts- field, where he resided during his early life, being engaged with his father in the management of a general store and the postoffice. He later moved to Bangor, where he was employed by the American Express Company for 30 years. About 1904 he purchased the Fox & Adams Company of Bangor, bakers and caterers, and retained the business until 1913, when he moved to this town and opened a bakery, which he conducted until his retirement in 1922. He had been a member for many years of Phlentoma Lodge, I. O. O. P., of Pittsfield. Mr. Ireland is survived by a daughter, Miss Gladys Ireland, of this town, and two grandchildren, Mrs. Philip Chandler of Port Chester, N. Y., and Robert Eliot, of Dexter. Funeral services were held from his late home on Maple street at 2.30 o'clock Sunday afternoon with Rev. William J. Metz, pastor of the First Universalist church, officiating. A profusion of beautiful floral offerings bore silent testimony of the high esteem in which the deceased was held by all who knew him. The bearers were Frank Howard, Percy A. Hasty, Arthur R. Levensellor and Walter B. Gould. Among those from out of town to attend the services were, Charles Batchelder and Mr. and Mrs. Albert Partridge of St. Albans; Mrs. Geo. P. Plurnmer and daughter of Newport; Mrs. Hazel Whitten of Etna; Mr. and Mrs. Albert Grey of North Newport; Mrs. Ida Merrow of Pittsfield; Mr. and Mrs. Duane Mower and Miss Althea Mower of Newport. Burial was in the family lot at Mount Pleasant cemetery.
