Obituary
Mrs. Charles M. Sawyer News of the passing of one of Dexter's most respected and beloved native women, Mrs. Agnes M. Sawyer, reached here Tuesday by wire to Mrs. J. Willis Haines, a cousin of the late husband of the deceased, Charles M. Sawyer. The remains were brought to Dexter and prayers said at Mt. Pleasant this forenoon, at 11 o'clock. The funeral services were conducted Wednesday forenoon in Braintree, Mass., at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Will Rogers, where she has made her home for several years. Mrs. Agnes M. Sawyer was born in Dexter, 82 years ago, the daughter of the late Nathan and Mary Wyman. She lived in this town all her life until about a year after the death of her husband, when she went to Braintree with her daughter and family. She has visited in town summers many times since, her last visit having been in 1927. Her parents' home was only one house removed from that of her husband's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Trision P. Sawyer, with whom they boarded for a number of years after their marriage in 1867, while Mrs. Sawyer worked in the dry goods store of Samuel S. Ireland. The Wyman home, was the present Byron Giles place on Main street, and the Triston Sawyer home on the spot where S. M. Small's house now stands. About ten years after Mr. and Mrs. Charles Sawyer were married, the large house now owned by Mrs. Ellen Hayes, was built for them and there they lived for over 35 years. The deceased was a charter member of Wassookeag chapter, Order of Eastern Star, and also a charter member of the Dexter Woman's Literary club. On leaving town she was made honorary member of the latter organization in which she was always active and deeply interested. She was a faithful member of the local Methodist church. The late Charles M. Sawyer was a prominent bank man in Maine for many years. He was made cashier of the First National Bank of Dexter in 1889 and afterwards became a member of the Board of Directors. In 1911 when the First National was liquidated and became the Dexter Trust and Banking Co., Mr. Sawyer was made its President and held the position until the time of his death in 1914. The only near relative surviving Mrs. Sawyer is her daughter, Mrs. Will Rogers, and two grandchildren, Mary and Charles Rogers.
