Obituary
Mrs. Mary V. Pierce The many friends of Mrs. Mary V. Pierce were saddened to learn of her death on Tuesday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Harry L. Tillson, on Pleasant street, following an illness of several weeks. The deceased was born in Dexter in 1847, the daughter of Nathan G. and Mary (Towle) Brackett. She received her education in the schools of Dexter, Dixfield, Readfield and Maine Wesleyan Seminary. In 1865 she was united in marriage with the late Thomas H. B. Pierce and made her home in East Wilton, where Mr. Pierce was a practicing attorney. In 1870 they removed to Dexter, where they lived until their decease. Both the late Mr. Pierce and the deceased were endowed with an ability along literary lines and wrote for many magazines and newspapers, doing a high grade of editorial work. Mrs. Pierce with her sister, Mrs. Frances B. Damon, of this town, edited The Quiet Hours magazine for many years. Mrs. Pierce was also an artist in oils and water colors, winning state recognition as such. Nationally honored by the W. C. T. U., she was state superintendent of Sunday school work for several years and held other offices both local and state in the W. C. T. U. At her last attendance at the local W. C. T. U., she was the gracious leader. Although a Unitarian Friend in beliefs she long attended the First Universalist church and was for many years a teacher in the church school. Talented, full of grace and goodness, she was widely and deeply loved. Besides one daughter, Mrs. Harry L. Tillson, she is survived by one son, Edward B. Pierce, one grandson, Rufus H. Tillson, and by one sister, Mrs. Frances B. Damon, all of this town. The family have the deep sympathy of a wide circle of friends in their bereavement. Funeral services will be conducted from the home on Pleasant street Friday Afternoon at 2:30 o'clock.
