Obituary
James B. Gordon Friends of James B. Gordon were saddened to learn of his death on June 16th, after a week's illness. He was born in New Sharon, Oct. 12, 1846, the youngest of the nine children of Josiah and Betsy (Beede) Gordon. During his boyhood the family moved to Levant. Here friendships were made in his boyhood and young manhood, which lasted through life. While still a young man he went to Pittsfield to work. After a little he made a home there for his father and mother for whom he cared during their last years and to whom he was much devoted. He married Estella J. Oliver of Dexter Nov. l3th, 1877. The early years of their married life were spent in Pittsfield. In the spring of 1886 they moved to a farm in East Dexter where they lived until the summer of 1909. Then health no longer equal to the hard work of the farm, they sold and going to North Dexter opened a grocery and feed store. This they conducted until a year ago when Mrs. Gordon died. After her death the business and the home were sold and Mr. Gordon and his daughter, Mrs. Erma G. Flanders, chose a home on Mill street, Dexter. Here he cheerfully spent the winter and spring. But brothers and sisters and the old dear friends were gone and too the deeply loved wife, who had been with him for nearly fifty years. He was ready and glad to join her and those others. He was a man in whose character was a splendid sense of right and fairness and he possessed the courage to do always under all conditions what seemed right and fair. A man with fine ideals and with sufficient strength to be loyal to them. Those needing help found him ready to help. In many cases this was given so unobtrusively that only the parties immediately concerned knew it had been given. Three daughters are left, Mrs. Frank Watson of Parkman, Mrs. W. N. Eaton and Mrs. Erma G. Flanders both of Dexter, who will sadly miss him, also seven grandchildren will hold his memory dear.
