Obituary	Mrs. Mary E. Curtis As briefly announced last week, the death of Mrs. Mary Eliza Curtis occurred at the home of her nephew, Norman Bean, of West Jonesport, Tuesday, Feb. 21st. Mrs. Curtis was one of nine children born to Henry and Eliza Bean who came from Sandwich, N. H., to Corinna in the year 1831. According to an old record Mr. Bean walked and drove some young stock while his wife drove the team bearing their household goods. At that time the country was one vast wilderness and they had to clear the land and build a log cabin in which to live. It was here that Mary was born, April 18, 1842, the sixth of the nine children. Later on Mr. Bean sold out in Corinna and moved to Dexter, where he and his wife both died in the year 1888. Mary went to Boston, where she met and married Oscar A. Curtis, Dec. 25th, 1861. They lived in Boston for several years, where Mr. Curtis worked at his trade of Master Builder. One of the last jobs that he did there was the rebuilding of the Ruggles St. Baptist church. Owing to ill health they moved to Addison, Maine, in 1881. Mrs. Curtis was baptized and taken into membership in the Harvard street Baptist church, Boston, in 1869. Later on, having bought a house on Parker street she took her letter from the Harvard street church and united with the Ruggles street church. For several years she was president of the Ladies' Temperance Union of the Ruggles street church. After moving to Addison, Mr. and Mrs. Curtis took several trips as passengers on vessels sailing out of Addison. One was with Capt. Evander Plummer to Philadelphia, and another was with Capt. Varanus Plummer to Havana, Cuba. Mr. Curtis died Sept. 24th, 1897. In 1897 a grandnephew, Norman N. Bean, four years of age, having been left an orphan in Sweden, the native home of his mother, Mrs. Curtis made arrangements to have him come to America to live with her. In December of that year she went to New York to meet him, and from that time until her death he was a great source of help and comfort to her. During her whole life Mrs. Curtis was an earnest Christian worker in all branches of church work. She was particlarly interested in the welfare of children, giving special attention to temperance. She was a member of the Three Quarter Century Club of Maine. Besides her nephew, Norman, she is survived by a brother, Charles F. Bean of Dexter, and a niece, Mrs. May E. Gibby, of Winthrop, Mass. Services were held from the home of Norman N. Bean at West Jonesport, Rev. David Hickland officiating. Interment was in the family lot in Church Hill cemetery, Addison.
