Obituary
Otis O. Roberts The passing of Otis O. Roberts, Civil War veteran and holder of the Congressional Medal of Honor on Saturday morning, after an illness of three days with heart trouble, was a shock to his many friends, as he had been in his usual health up until Wednesday when he was stricken. Mr. Roberts was born in Sangervillle March 20, 1842, the son of Amos and Christina Ryerson Roberts, and was one of 13 children of which he is the last. He learned the cobbler trade and was working at it in Sangerville in 1861 when Fort Sumpter was fired upon and war declared. He came immediately to Dexter and was the first man to enlist in this town. He went to Bangor with about 30 young men and after some training he joined Corinth Company, 6th Maine infantry Volunteers. He went south and joined his company with the army of the Potomac. He was cited for conspicuous gallantry at Rappahannock Station when single handed in a hand to hand combat he captured the Confederate flag. He was allowed to take the flag to army headquarters and his company acted as his escort. Later with General Russell he took the flag to Washington and presented it to the secretary of war. He was made sergeant following this. He returned from his trip to Washington and went into the battle of the Wilderness, it was at the battle of Cedar Creek where he received injuries that caused the amputation of his left foot. He was honorably discharged on November 14, 1861 and on November 17, 1861 he was made second Lieut. of Company A. First Maine Veterans. He was a member of the Grand Army Republic, Plymouth Lodge, I. O. O. F., of this town. Although not a member of the Universalist church, he was affiliated with it. Besides his wife, Mrs. Louisa H., he is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Arthur Inman of this town, Mrs. Duane Mower, of Newport and Mrs. Fred S. Hill of Harmony, and by two sons, Otis J. and Winfield T. Roberts, both of Dexter, one step son, Winfield S. Twombly, also of Dexter, and by several grandchildren and great grandchildren. The family have the sympathy of many friends in their loss. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the home on Grove street, Rev. W. J. Metz of the First Universalist church officiat- ing. Officers of Plymouth lodge, I. O. O. F. conducted their services also. The bearers were six grandsons, Hazen, Kenneth and Meredith Hager of Portland, Stanley Inman of South Sangerville, Harvey Inman and Donald Mower of Dexter.
