Obituary
FIREMAN IS KILLED BY FALL Burning of Gerry Block Results in Fatality as Well as a Large Property Loss Fire, which practically ruined the four-story Gerry block, broke out Monday morning about 4.30 o'clock. This was one of the hardest fights the Dexter fire department has ever been called upon to wage and when it was finally subdued it was at a cost of one fireman dead, another overcome and carried off unconscious and many completely exhausted by their strenuous efforts to stay the spread of the flames. Nelson Carter, 35-year-old fireman of Dexter, an employee of A. W. Keyte, coal and wood dealer, lost his life when he fell from a ladder from the fourth story, breaking his neck. He leaves a wife, Lena Pearl Carter, his mother, Mrs. Nelson Carter, Sr., and an eight-year-old son, Kenneth, all of Dexter. Nelson Carter Killed by Fall Nelson Carter, 35, who for several years has been a valued member of the fire department, met a tragic death when he was thrown 60 feet to the ground from a ladder. Young Carter, who was on a ladder holding the hose had been held there by a companion, the water was shut off for a moment and Carter was left alone, when the water was turned on again the force of it is believed to have thrown him to the ground. Carter suffered a broken neck, a fractured skull and broken shoulders. A physician rushed to his aid but he was dead when picked from the ground, death being instantaneous. Two of his fellow fire fighters became unconscious at the sight of their dead comrade. Several firemen received minor cuts during the fire and several suffered from the breathing of smoke fumes. The wooden building adjacent to the Shepherd block owned by the George Dustin estate and Mrs. Eva Randall, suffered some damage from smoke and water and was estimated at $600. (p.1) Funeral Services for Nelson Carter Out of respect to the memory of a brother fireman, Nelson Carter, who lost his life while fighting the fire at the Gerry block Monday, the funeral services Wednesday were attended by the members of the fire department in a body, 33 out of 37 attending. The services were held at the home of Mrs. Carter's parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Pearl, on Church street and were conducted by Rev. Horace H. Hayes of the Free Baptist church. Many beautiful floral offerings were in evidence. Six of the firemen acted as bearers: Harry A. Wilkins, chief, Albert L. Davis, Fred Keyte, Elwood Stevens, James Cookson and Harold Hudson. (p.5)
