DR. J. H. MURPHY DIES SUDDENLY Was World War Veteran, Prominent Citizen and Friend Dr. Joseph H. Murphy, a leading physician and World War Veteran, died at his home on Spring street Wednesday morning, after an illness of only a few weeks. He was born in Andover, N. B., May, 4, 1866, and studied the drug business finally becoming a registered druggist. He worked as a drug clerk in Calais and Auburn. Afterwards he studied at the Maine Medical School of Bowdoin College from which he was graduated in 1891. Dr. Murphy began the practice of medicine in Fort Fairfield and was there several years, removing from there to St. Albans, where he stayed only a short time before coming to this town, where he has been in practice for over 25 years. He was a World War veteran and served overseas from July 13, 1918 to March 3, 1919. He was cited for bravery under fire by General John F. O'Ryan of the 27th Division. He was made a first lieutenant in the Medical Corps which was assigned to the 103rd Ambulance Train Company of the 103rd Sanitary Team. Dr. Murphy's war work started in 1916, when he examined the recruits for Company A of the old Second Maine Infantry which was organized in this town at that time. On January 4, 1916, he was made first lieutenant of the Maine Medical Reserve Corps. He also served with the relief troops at the time of the big Halifax, Nova Scotia explosion. He was made a captain in the United States Reserve Officers Medical Corps, February 9, 1918. He served at Camp Wadsworth in the Medical Corps and was honorably discharged from the United States service in April, 1919, at Camp Evans. He was made a major of the Medical Reserve Corps. He was a vice commander of Edward J. Pullyord Post of the American Legion and was a member of Penobscot Lodge, F. & A. M., of Dexter, and St. John Royal Arch Chapter, also of the Dexter Club. He is survived by his widow, Annie Winslow Murphy, a daughter, Mrs. Charles H. Ansell, of Dexter, three grandchildren, all of Dexter, a sister, Mrs. Stephen P. White, of Andover, N. B., and a brother, Charles L. Murphy, of Spokane, Wash. The funeral services will be held in the First Universalist church Friday at 10 o'clock. Ex-service men who plan to attend the funeral are asked to meet at the John Dyer store, Friday at 9.45 a. m. All Masons are asked to meet at the Masonic hall Friday morning at 9 o'clock for the purpose of attending Dr. J. H. Murphy's funeral which will be held at the Universalist church at 10 o'clock.
