Obituary	STEPHEN L. JACOBS DEXTER, Stephen L. Jacobs, husband of Isabel A. Jacobs, died February 26, 2001 at a Dover-Foxcroft hospital. Mr. Jacobs was born July 28, 1922 in Boston, Mass., son of Helen Foster and Alfred W. Jacobs of Hingham, Mass. He was the tenth generation of the Jacobs family to be raised in Hingham. After graduating from Hingham High School in June 1940 he attended the University of Maine at Orono graduating in June 1947 with a BS in Forestry, however he retained his affiliation with his original class of 1944. He enlisted in the Army Reserve in May of 1942 and was called to active duty with the University of Maine Advanced Infantry ROTC in June 1943. Following Infantry basic training at Camp Wheeler, Georgia, he graduated from the Armored OCS at Ft. Knox, Kentucky in May 1944. He and Isabel Ansell of Dexter, were married June 12, 1944 in Dexter. While serving as an infantry instructor at Camp Roberts, California he was ordered overseas in December 1944. He served as a rifle platoon leader with Company C, 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division on Luzon, Philippine Islands. His platoon was the first US unit to enter the city of Baguio, the summer capital of the Philippines, in April 1945. Wounded on June 4, 1945, he returned to duty with the 129th Infantry in August of 1945. He was awarded the Combat Infantryman's Badge and the Bronze Star. He returned to the states and mustered out in March 1946. He served in the Maine Army National Guard for eight years resigning with the rank of Captain from Headquarters 240th AAA Group MENG in 1958. Following several years working as a forester he started teaching science at S.D. Hanson High School in Buxton in 1956. In August 1958 he joined the faculty of Gould Academy in Bethel, where he taught Physics and Forestry. At Gould, he developed one of the first high school forestry courses in the state. In August 1963 he received a Master of Education degree from the University of Maine at Orono. In August 1966 he joined the faculty of Dexter Regional High School in Dexter, where he taught Physics and Chemistry for seventeen years, retiring in June 1982. He was one of the first Trustees of the Dexter Utility District and served on the Dexter Planning Board. He was active in the First Universalist Church in Dexter and sang in it's choir for many years. He also sang with the Shiretown Singers of Dover-Foxcroft and in the Dexter Community Chorus. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Isabel (Ansell) Jacobs of Dexter; three sons and their families; Richard and his wife Linda Walden and their daughter Katherine of Modesto, California; Lawrence and his wife Brenda of Corinna and Branda's three children, Bonnie Simcock and husband Jason of Vermont, Anna Searway and husband Tom, son Hazen and daughter Molly all of Waterboro and her son Ensign Joseph Satterfield, US Navy; Charles and his wife Linda Smith-Dyer and their daughter Lauren of Winthrop, and Linda's sons, Skip Dyer and Rick Dyer and his wife Jane of Boston; Mr. Jacobs' brother, Foster and his wife Lorraine live in Owls Head. A service of remembrance will be held 10 AM Saturday March 3, at the First Universalist Church in Dexter with Rev. Adam Tierney officiating.
