Obituary
Leonard H. Tibbetts In Dexter, Mar. 11, after a brief illness of heart trouble, Mr. Tibbetts passed to the great beyond. Mr. Tibbetts was born in Glenburn in 1846, being the last survivor of a family of 13 children. In the days of the Civil war he enlisted as sharp shooter but a serious hospital sickness delayed him so that he was in service but 54 days. Later Mr. Tibbetts became one of Ripley's leading farmers, living there about 40 years, during this time he kept a large herd of thoroughbred holsteins, and made cheese, which won first prize for years at county and state fairs. He was also a finished carpenter, and many fine structures bear silent witness to his thorough workmanship. The last 20 years of his life were spent in Dexter and on the Pacific Coast. Mr. Tibbetts was a most valued member of the Methodist church, also of the Grange. He was an honest, conscientious citizen. He was naturally retiring, but enjoyed the utmost respect of all who knew him. He was a man that could hold friends when once he made them, for beside being upright he was unselfish and kindness itself, not only in his town, but his home. Altho of a quiet homelike nature he was quite a traveller, going to Washington State twice and California three times. Mr. Tbibetts was married Jan. 1, 1923, in Seirre Madre, Cal., to Mrs. Laura Bryant, who has been a devoted wife, and most tenderly cared for him in his declining years, which time was spent in Maine, Washington, and California. He leaves to mourn his death a wife, besides three children by a former marriage, and a host of friends. Services were conducted at the Methodist church, Mar. 13, Rev. W. H. Dunham officiating. There were many beautiful flowers. Burial was in the family lot, Mt. Pleasant cemetery. The Eastern Gazette 3-17-1927, p.8 Funeral services for Leonard H. Tibbetts, Civil War veteran, were held Sunday afternoon, Rev. W. H. Dunham of the Methodist Episcopal church officiating. The deceased was a lifelong resident of this town and his death came at the age of 80, following a short illness. For many years he resided on a farm on the Ripley road until a few years ago, when he retired from active work and took up his residence in town. He was for many years among the prominent farmers of this section. He was a member of the Grand Army post of this town and Dexter Grange. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Laura Tibbetts, and by two sons and one daughter by a former marriage, Fred L. Tibbetts of this town, William Tibbetts of Waltham, Mass., and Mrs. A. P. Leavitt, of New Britain, Conn., and by six grandsons, Lawrence Tibbetts of Dexter, Morton Bullard of Dexter, Ray Bullard of Augusta, and Arthur Bullard of New Britain, Conn., Francis Tibbetts of Portsmouth, N. H., and Earl Tibbetts of Waltham, Mass., and by two grandaughters, Mrs. Hazel Wiggin and Miss Delma Tibbetts of Waltham, Mass. The bearers were Morton Bullard, Ray Bullard, Arthur Bullard and George Bertrand. There was a profusion of beautiful floral tributes. In- terment was in Mt. Pleasant cemetery.
