Obituary
William W. Cates William W. Cates passed away Friday afternoon at his home on Zion’s Hill, after 12 years of failing health. He was born in Windsor 74 years ago but at the age of two years went with his parents to Palermo, where he lived until he was 25 years of age. About this time he went to Belfast, where he worked for four years for William Priest, manufacturer of men's clothing. After the four years with Mr. Priest, Mr. Cates went into business for himself in the manufacture of clothing, featuring uniforms, for bands, etc. In 1901 he went to Newport in partnership with R. M. Goodwin, selling out to Mr. Goodwin he came to Dexter in 1906 and bought out the clothing business of Leville Bros., which was located on Grove street where the Wassookeag Cleansing Co., is now. Later Mr. Cates moved his place of business to Main street in the store now occupied by Edward Mountain. In Dec. 1919, because of failing health he sold out his business to Pooler & Mountain and retired. While in Belfast, Mr. Cates served as city Councilman two years. He was a member of Phoenix Lodge, F. and A. M. in Belfast, of Bedivere lodge K. of P. and Crystal Temple Py- thian Sisters in Dexter. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Alice Cates, and by one stepdaughter, Mrs. Albert Gowdy, of this town; by two sisters, Mrs. Emma Bragg, of Pittsfield and Mrs. Susie Tasker, of San Diego, Cal.; by two half brothers Edward Cates of San Diego, Cal., and Alonzo Cates, of Palermo. Funeral services were held at the home Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The K. of P. ritualistic service was used. Burial was at Mt. Pleasant cemetery.
