Funeral Services Held For Herbert M. Gates A requiem high mass was celebrated at 10 o'clock Monday morning at St. Anne's Catholic church for Herbert M. Gates, 80, a well-known business man and resident of Dexter for over 45 years. The remains were brought here Sunday following his death on Saturday at Bennington, Vt., where for the past few months he had been with his eldest son, Herbert. Bearers were: Dr. C. L. Ryan, Omar Carr, Mark S. Roberts, Fred Clukey, Fred Keyte and Harold Getchell. Interment was in Mt. Pleasant cemetery. Born in Carroll, Maine, March 10, 1868, the son of Albert and Abbie (Monroe) Gates, he came to Dexter in 1901 from Lincoln, where he had managed a hotel, and took over the Exchange Hotel then located on the site of the present Chamber of Commerce building. After a number of years in the hotel business, in partnership with the late Charles Hutchinson, he purchased the furniture and undertaking business of the late Charles Wyman on the site of the present Ramsay and Gates store. The late Galen R. Ramsay later joined the firm and the three continued business for 25 years, Following Mr. Hutchinson's retirement, Ramsay and Gates continued until July 1936, when Ramsay bought out Gates' interest. His wife, Mrs. Margaret (Chisholm) Gates of Mattawamkeag died several years ago. Survivors include two sons, Herbert C. of Bennington, Vt., Commander Bernard M., U. S. Navy (retired) of Miami, Fla. And a sister, Mrs. Virgil Clay.
