Obituary
Rev. Patrick A. Hayes The many friends of Rev. Patrick A. Hayes, Pastor of St. Ann's Catholic church were saddened to hear of his death which occurred at the rectory on Monday forenoon, after an illness of nearly three years. His age was 69 years. He was born in County Limerick, Ireland, the son of John and Honora (Lane) Hayes. He received his early education in the public schools of Quincy, Mass. Later he attended Laurant college and the Grand Seminary of Montreal, where he studied for the priesthood. On Feb. 24, 1900, he was ordained and went to Louisiana, where he served as curate for one year. He was then transferred to the Portland diocese, where for about nine years he was curate in Ellsworth under the late Fr. O'Brien. His first parish was in Milo, after serving there for a year he transferred his rectory to Dover-Foxcroft, where he served both parishes for about sixteen years. He has been in Dexter nine years. Surviving are four sisters, Mrs. Bridget Dunn and Miss Margaret and Elizabeth Hayes, all of Quincy, and Mrs. Geo. Faircloth of Schenectardy, N. Y. A solemn pontificial mass was held at St. Ann's church Tuesday morning at 9 o'clock, with Rt. Rev. Msgr. Geo. P. Johnson of Portland, vicar general of the diocese as celebrant; Fr. Thomas Nelligan, deacon; Fr. James Savage sub-deacon; and Fr. John Houlihan, a former pastor of St. Ann's, delivering the funeral sermon. Other priests attending the funeral besides Fr. David Surette, who has been curate at St. Ann's under Fr. Hayes, for the past three years were Fr. McFarland, Fr. Tim Houlihan, Fr.,Harris and Fr. Wm. Nelligan. The bearers who were members of the fourth degree Knights of Columbus were Raymond Crady and John M. Coyne, both of Bangor; L. Frank Baker and Wm. Barney of Orono and Dr. H. Edward Whalen and Arthur P. Ambrose of Dexter. The Honorary bearers were Paul Clukey, Peter N. Clukey, Joseph Kanaley, Wm. Coughlin, Thomas Clukey, Norris Bertrand, Thomas Groleau and John Dyer. After the services here the body was then taken to Quincy, Mass., where another requiem mass was sung in St. Johns church. Burial was in Quincy.
