Obituary
James L. Leighton The death of J. L. Leighton occurred at the E. M. G. hospital in Bangor Saturday morning, July 6. Mr. Leighton had been a great sufferer there since May 3, with cancer behind one of his eyes, for which he underwent an operation; he also had diabetis. His wife and children visited him as often as possible, and everything was done that was possible to do for his comfort. July 4th, he passed into a coma from which he did not rally, and the end came peacefully Saturday morning. He was born in Cambridge July 27, 1867, eldest child of Fisher and Louisa (Rogers) Leighton and lived in his native town until about thirty-two years ago when he moved his family to Garland and a few years later to Dexter, where he has since resided. He was united in marriage to Miss Rhoda O. Adams of Wellington Oct. 21, 1893, and to this union five children were born, all of whom are living: Mrs. Valentine Pines, Boston; Mrs. Elvira Dunlap, San Francisco, Calif.; Earl Leighton, Providence, R. I.; Mrs. Rhoena Adams Odlum, Boothbay Harbor; Clifford Leighton and wife living at the Leighton home. Five grandchilden also survive, Robert Dunlap, Jr., Beverly, Richard and Lois Leighton, and Virginia Odlum; two sisters, Mrs. D. C. Packard and Miss Lena Leighton of Cambridge and one brother, Elijah Leighton of Lewiston, besides many more distant relatives, to all of whom deepest sympathy is extended. Mr. Leighton has been a cattle dealer nearly all his life and has many friends and acquaintances in this and other parts of the state. Services were conducted from the home Monday, July 8, at 1:30 p. m., Rev. Mr. Knox officiating. Among those from other towns present were: Preston Mitchell, Needham, Mass.; Mrs. Valentine Pines, Boston; Earl Leighton, Providence, R. I.; Mr. and Mrs. Lucy Packard, Miss Lena Leighton, Mr. and Mrs. I. W. Ham and little daughter, Arvene, Mrs. Vernol Holt and Bridge Austin, Cambridge; Mrs. Alton Littlefield and little son, Edwin, Hartland; Mrs. Adena Judkins, Mr. and Mrs. L. J. Adams, Mrs. Gertrude Cook, Mrs. Etta Bell, Stanley Seabury of Guilford; Mr. and Mrs. Vernie Bridges, Mrs. Lucinda Sprague, Mrs. Annie Curtis and little girl boarded of Dover-Foxcroft, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Bennett of Abbot.
