Obituary	GEORGE C. FURBER Former Editor and Publisher of the Eastern Gazette Dead at Advanced Age George C. Furber, nearly 89, a former publisher of the Eastern Gazette, who for about forty years was editor and publisher of weekly papers, first in Michigan and later in New England, and for nearly twenty years of that period editor of the White Mountain Republic at Littleton, N. H. died Saturday, March 7, at his home, 174 Allerton road, Newton Highlands, Mass., where he had lived since 1918. The funeral was held from his late residence on Sunday and the remains were taken to Littleton, where on Tuesday there was a brief service before interment in Glenwood cemetery. His wife, who was Hattie D. Meserve of Jackson, N. H., to whom he was married June 27, 1876, died April 28, 1933, and their only son, Charles Harris Furber, a graduate of Dartmouth, died in 1933. Mr. Furber was born at Woodstock, Vt., April 27, 1847. His parents, James A., and Hannah (Harris) Furber, moved when he was six years old to Canaan, N. H. He attended Canaan Union Academy, graduating later from Eastman's business college at Poughkeepsie, N. Y. He went then to Allegan, Mich., where a brother and sister lived, and from 1870 to 1874 was a part owner of the Allegan County Democrat. Coming back to New Hampshire, he became on his 27th birthday the owner of the White Mountain Republic and made his home in Littleton until 1898. He was an officer of the Littleton Medical Association for many years, treasurer of the Union School District of Littleton and a member of the Board of Education, and took a considerable part in compiling the town history. After selling the Republic he was for a time business manager of the Concord People and Patriot. From 1898 to 1902 Mr. and Mrs. Furber lived in Hanover, N. H. In 1901 he bought the Eastern Gazette, which he sold six years later to the Gazette Publishing Co., retaining an interest in the publication until 1912, and moved to Dorchester, where he lived until his removal to Newton Highlands. During his years in Dexter he made many warm friends, who regret his passing. Mrs. Furber, who was the daughter of Gen. George P. Meserve of Jackson, N. H., was educated in Fryeburg Academy and New Hampton Institute and taught in several schools and academies, including a period of seven years in the Littleton High school. She was one of the organizers of the Colonial Club of that town. Her relatives in Jackson, the Meserve, Trickey and Perkins families, have been among the leaders in developing the summer business of that town. Mr. Furber is survived by his daughter-in-law, Mrs. Edna Wahle Furber of Brookline; several nephews and nieces, including Charles F. Bingham, president of the Littleton (N. H.) Savings Bank; Russell C. Furber of Hopkins, Mich., Elmer E. Lord of Belmont, Mrs. William H. Vincent of Plainville, Conn., and Mrs. Glyndon H. Smith of Dorchester. There are also several grandnieces, among them Miss Dorcas W. Lord of Lynn and Mrs. Frederick McGilvray of Linden, N. J., and a number of grandnephews.
