Obituary	Heman B. Scribner Heman Blackwell Scribner, who for some years claimed the distinction of being the oldest active barber in New England, died Tuesday night at the home of his son, Eugene Scribner, after a brief illness. Mr. Scribner was born in Jackman, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Elbridge Scribner. The family moved from Jackman when their son was nine years of age and at the age of 14 he learned the barbering trade and continued to follow the trade for 78 years before the infirmities of old age forced him to retire to home life. At the opening of the Civil War he was operating a shop in Augusta and later conducted a shop in Waterville when there was but one other barber in town. For the past 19 years he has made his home in Dexter and practiced his trade, serving the public in his ever courteous and efficient manner. On his 80th birthday he took in $17.60 at his chair, a fact of which he was justly proud, and on his 90th birthday last March he was still barbering and on that day he was remembered by his many friends with gifts and a birthday cake and a band played in honor of the occasion. Of kind and pleasing disposition he was affectionately known as "Gramp" Scribner. He was the second oldest citizen of Dexter and will be greatly missed. Besides his son, Eugene, who worked by the side of his father for many years, he is survived by four grandchildren: Raymond, of Waterville; Elmer, Harold and Dale, of Springfield, Vt., and by seven great grandchildren, a nephew and niece. Funeral services will be held from the Ramsay & Gates Undertaking room Friday afternoon Jan. 31, at 1 o'clock, Rev. E. Mercer officiating.
