Obituary
Dr. Virgil A. Widdoes Pneumonia, which set in following an attack of influenza several days ago, resulted in the death, Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 14, of Dr. Virgil A. Widdoes, prominent Lynn dentist, at his home, 24 Orchard road, Swampscott, Mass. He was 41 years of age. Although born in Mapleville, R. I., Dr. Widdoes moved to Dexter, Me., while still a young man, graduating from the Dexter High school and later from the University of Pennsylvania, with the class of 1916. He first practiced dentistry in Dexter, immediately following his graduation from college, and a year later became associated with a Worcester dentist. Coming to Lynn, he entered the office of Dr. Arthur S. Hovey early in 1918, shortly before his enlistment in the Dental Corps of the 303rd Field Artilery. Dr. Widdoes served overseas for 18 months and was honorably discharged from the U. S. army as a captain in 1919. Some time after his return he opened his own office, maintaining it until his death. He was actively identified with the Lynn and New England Dental societies for many years, and held membership in a number of fraternal organizations. Besides being a charter member of Anah Temple, A. F. and A. M., in Bangor, Me., Dr. Widdoes was a member of several other Masonic bodies, including the Ionic club of Swampscott. He was also a member of Overseas Post, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Swampscott Couples club. He was well known as a golfer. He leaves big wife, Mrs. Edith (Stockwell) Widdoes; three daughters, Cynthia and Jane of Swampscott and Mrs. Priscilla Orcutt of Fall River; his parents, Andrew B., and Ella M. Widdoes of, Dexter, Me.; two brothers, Ernest Widdoes of Dexter and Howard Widdoes of Buffalo, N. Y.; two sisters, Mrs. Viola Lawrence of Waterville, Me., and Mrs. Mildred Hyde of Swampscott, and two grandchildren. Thronged by former associates, friends and relatives, the Central Congregational church was the scene of simple but impressive services Friday afternoon. Rev. Garfield Morgan, pastor, officiated at the brief service. Members of the Lynn Dental society and local units of the Veterans of Foreign Wars attended in a body, together with representatives of several other organizations with which Dr. Widdoes was associated. There was a profusion of floral tributes. Burial was in the vault at Swampscott cemetery.
