Prof. Joseph K. Mr. Springall was born in Garland June 4, 1858, the son of Dr. Joseph and Maria Louisa Springall and came to Dexter with his parents when but a year old, making his home here ever since. He was educated in the Dexter public schools and choosing music as his life work be entered the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston where he studied two years. He later went abroad where he studied under some of the leading tutors in London and Paris. Upon his return he conducted classes in piano and voice continuing for many years and became well known throughout the state in musical circles. He was especially known for his generosity in training young people in music and he took a keen interest in the welfare of each and every pupil. Many of his pupils have gone far in the music world. Several years Mr. Springall spent a part of each winter with Prof. Francis Peakes, a noted vocal teacher and from him received daily training. It was while with Prof. Peakes Mr. Springall became acquainted with Madame Nodica, one of America's former leading opera stars who was also tutoring with Professor Peakes. For more than fifty years Prof. Springall served as organist at the First Universalist church. At the completion of fifty years service the church honored Prof. Springall at the morning church service and presented him with gifts from the parish in appreciation of his many years of loyalty and faithfulness. He also presided at the organ at the Church of the Messiah, Episcopal, and was a member of that church. He leaves one niece, Mrs. Gordon Winslow, of Lewiston, and two nephews, Leroy Springall, of Lewiston, and Theodore K. Springall of Winthrop, Mass. Funeral services were held at the church of the Messiah, Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, by Rev. Gordon C. Gillett, of the Old Town Episcopal church. Interment was in the family lot at Mt. Pleasant cemetery and the bearers were Joseph Rand, Nathan Bucknam, Elmer Fortier and Rufus Tillson.
