Samuel L. Small The funeral of Samuel L. Small, one of Dexter's most successful and highly respected business men, was held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the First Universalist church, with the Rev. Kenneth R. Hutchinson officiating. Active bearers were Leigh Cyphers, Carl Bates, Harry Blake and Dean Rollins, with W. A. Brewster, P. A. Hasty, Harry Bassett, and Forest Parsons acting as honorary bearers. Floral tributes were in profusion. Interment was in the family lot at Mt. Pleasant cemetery. Mr. Small's death occurred Thursday evening following an illness of several months' duration. Born in Dexter eighty years ago the son of Samuel C. and Sophia Williams) Small, he attended the public schools of Dexter and in 1878 entered the employ of Dwight Maxfield in the feed and grain business. He purchased the business in 1882 which he has successfully conducted. In 1912 his son, Harold D. Small, became associated with his father in business. Of a kindly and genial temperament, his friends were countless and of long standing. Mr. Small was a director of the Dexter Loan and Building association; member of Penobscot lodge, F. and A. M., and St. John's Royal Arch chapter of Dexter; St. John's Commandry and Anah Temple, Mystic Shrine of Bangor; a former member of Bedivere lodge, Knights of Pythias being one of its charter members; and at one time was one of the directors of the Dexter branch of the Merrill Trust company. A member of the Dexter club for many years, he was elected to the honorary list last January, when he resigned after many years of active participation in its affairs. He was a faithful and generous supporter of the First Universalist church where he served on the board of trustees. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Lillian Maxfield Small; his son, Harold D. Small; a daughter, Mrs. Willis G. Haseltine; a sister, Miss Lizzie Small; four grandchildren, Arthur Haseltine, Miss Ruth Haseltine, Mrs. Clair Wilkins, and Mrs. Eldrid Herrick, and one great grandson, Arthur Dwight Haseltine, all of Dexter. Out of town relatives and friends attending the services included: Miss Dorothy Schoppe of Cherryfield, Mr. and Mrs. Schoppe of Brewer, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Maxfield and Mr. and Mrs. Danold. Maxfield of Guilford, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Ingraham of Augusta, Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Lantz of Brewer and Mr. and Mrs. P. G. Freeman of Waterville.
