MAJOR C. S. TREAT PASSES AWAY Major General Charles Gould Treat, 81, U. S. A., retired, died Saturday, Oct. 11, at the Walter Reed hospital in Washington, D. C. General Treat was born in Dexter, Me., Dec. 30, 1859, and was named for Charles Gould, the father of George P. Gould, of Orono, who is a cousin of the deceased. He was a veteran of the Spanish-American and World Wars during his forty years of service, which began with his graduation from the United States Military Academy, West Point, N. Y., in 1882 and ended with his retirement in 1922 at which time he was on duty in the Phillippines. He served as commander of cadets at West Point from 1901 until 1905. General Treat was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal for " . . . sound diplomatic ability . . . and . . . in maintaining the morale at a high state of efficiency during the trying days before the Armistice . . ." while serving as chief of the American military mission to Italy at the end of the World War. He also received the Serbian Order of the White Eagle with swords and the Italian Order of St. Maurice and St. Lazarus. .He is survived by his wdiow, Mrs. Edith P. Treat of Washington and two daughters, Mrs. A. B. Butler of Tulsa, Okla., and Mrs. A. V. Arnold of Wilmington, Del. Funeral services were held Tuesday in West Point, N. Y.
