Obituary
Mrs. Flora Katen Mrs. Flora Gee Katen, widow of Willard W. Katen, passed away in Monday, November 6th, at 12 o'clock, at the home of her sister, Mrs. Dennis Jacobs, in Pittsfield, after a few days' illness of a heart attack and asthma. She was visiting there for a few days while en route from Portland, where she had spent the summer in the home of her son, Elrner L. Katen, to Dover-Foxcroft, where she planned to spend the winter with her daughter, Mrs. Edna K. Frost, and husband at their home. Mrs. Katen is survived by a son, Elmer L. Katen of Portland, a daughter, Mrs. Edna K. Frost, of Dover-Foxcroft; a granddaughter, Miss Joyce A. Katen, of Portland; three sisters, Mrs. Dennis Jacobs, of Pittsfield; Mrs. Frances Foley, of Portland; and Mrs. Daisy Arnold, also of Portland. Mrs. Katen was born in Somerville, Mass., May 5, 1865, the daughter of Frank C. and Elizabeth J. B. Gee, the eldest of ten children. Her parents moved to Dexter when she was very young. She grew up in this town and after her marriage to Willard W. Katen, in young womanhood, they established their home on a farm on the Charleston road, and until Mr. Katen's death about ten years ago, had spent her life in Dexter, and vicinity, moving to the village a few years later, where she lived until failing health made this no longer possible. Since then she had lived with her son and daughter, who gave her devoted care and attention. Mrs. Katen was a devoted wife and mother, always interested in every good cause. After her children had gone to homes of their own, she cared for many homeless orphans, making this her chief interest, and fortunate indeed were the little waifs who grew up in the kindly atmosphere of her home. She had an optimistic, unselfish dispotition, and was beloved by all who knew her. She leaves hosts of friends who regret her passing. She was a devoted Christian Scientist a member of the Mother Church in Boston. She had studied and practised Christian Science in her daily life for more than thirty years, and her cheerfulness was a lesson to all with whom she came in contact. Funeral services were held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Jacobs, Pittsfield, at 10 A. M. Thursday. Rev. Henry Osgood, pastor of the Baptist church, officiated. Interment was in the family lot in Mt. Pleasant cemetery.
