Obituary
DEATH OF DEXTER'S OLDEST RESIDENT Henry P. Dexter Passes Away at His Home on Maple Street at the Age of 97 Years Henry Paine Dexter, 97, Dexter's oldest and a most respected citizen, died at his home on Maple street Tuesday evening after a long period of failing health. He was born in Orneville April 10, 1842 the son of Gideon and Eunice Raymond Dexter. His early life was spent at Atkinson, Dover-Foxcroft and Wellington, coming to Dexter at the age of 23 years. For several years he worked at carpentry during the summer and cooked in lumber camps in the winter. In 1872 he went to Boston where he remained for two years doing carpentry work and attending evening drawing school. In 1875 he was united in marriage with Miss. Frances Swanton of this town, who passed away three years ago. For over half a century Mr. Dexter was prominent in building construction not only in and around Dexter, but he was called to Massachusetts and New Hampshire for carpentry work on residences, business blocks and churches. Among the buildings which will serve as memorials to the splendid work of this grand man are the Methodist, Congregational and Catholic churches in Dexter, the Christian church at Corinna and the Universalist church at Guilford. He was foreman on the framing of the block now occupied by the Merrill Trust company, and built the Hale-Daggett block, the Blethen block, and Wyman block, in addition to constructing between seventy and eighty dwellings in this locality. Since his retirement at the age of 86, Mr. Dexter has lived quietly at his Maple street residence. For the past five years being almost totally blind. Through these trying years his courage and fortitude have won for him the esteem of many friends. Mr. Dexter was a member of Plymouth Lodge, I. 0. 0. F. and of the First Baptist church. He is survived by a brother, Frank Dexter of Dover-Foxcroft and a nephew, Henry P. Dexter of Abbot. Funeral services were held from the home this afternoon at 2 o'clock, with the Rev Ondon Stairs Officiating. The Odd Fellow service was impressively used, and the profusion of beautiful flowers were silent tributes of the esteem in which he was held by the citizens.
